Pregnant and Lactating Cats and Dogs

To help you know what to expect during a pet's pregnancy and lactating, we asked Dr Jim Gibbs:

1. What nutrients are necessary for pregnant and lactating pets and why?

During pregnancy and lactation, pets need a lot of energy and need some particular nutrients to promote healthy growth. Poor nutrition can cause kittens or puppies to be born underweight and leave them prone to disease low survival rates.

Protein: Protein is the main biological component. The protein requirement of female cats or dogs during pregnancy is 2-6 times that of non-pregnant adult female cats or dogs. And because cats and dogs are carnivores, meat protein is more suitable for their digestive system than plant protein. Our goat milk powder is rich in animal protein, which can help the healthy development of pets and cubs during pregnancy.

Lactoferrin, Colostrum, and Vitamin C: Owners should ensure that cats and dogs do not get sick during pregnancy. Many drugs are not suitable for cats and dogs during pregnancy. In the case of illness and inability to use drugs, the disease will aggravate the discomfort of cats and dogs during pregnancy and even affect the development of the fetus. PetNZC, therefore, added lactoferrin and colostrum. Both of them are rich in Immunoglobulin G (IgG), which can safely and effectively improve the immunity of cats and dogs during pregnancy. There is also vitamin C in the formula. PetNZC guards cats and dogs during pregnancy.

Calcium: In mammals, pregnancy and lactating taxes the calcium stores of the body. Calcium allows the uterine muscle to slide past and shorten, resulting in effective uterine contraction. Low blood calcium leads to ineffective contractions and nervousness, often resulting in cub loss. Mom will pull calcium out of the bone to augment her need. In late pregnancy, the pregnant pet's demand for calcium increases with the fetal demand and mammary gland development. The parathyroid gland requests calcium from the bone to supplement calcium levels as is needed. This demand for calcium spikes at whelping and lactation and continues to increase, peaking when the cubs are two weeks of age. PetNZC added calcium to keep pets healthy during pregnancy, giving birth, and lactating.

Lysine and Taurine: Amino acids are the essential substances that make up proteins. Among the types of amino acids that pets need,  lysine and taurine are most important. Lysine plays a vital role in the health of the brain, liver and gallbladder of pets. It promotes the pet's metabolism and is an essential amino acid that the pet itself cannot synthesize. A lack of taurine can lead to developmental delays, digestive and heart diseases and even blindness. PetNZC is specially formulated with lysine and taurine to ensure the healthy pregnancy and lactating of pets and cubs.

DHA: DHA is a natural Omega-3 essential fatty acid essential for kittens and puppies in the brain, eye, and nervous system development. PetNZC milk powder provides rich DHA for pets.

Minerals and Energy: Many pets suffer from pregnancy reactions, such as morning sickness, insomnia, and lack of appetite. Therefore, PetNZC added zinc, iron, selenium and other trace elements to supplement or equalize the diet of pregnant cats and dogs. In addition, we also added appropriate amounts of glucose and fat to maintain the physical strength of pregnant cats and dogs.

2. What are our breakthroughs?

Many cats and dogs are lactose intolerant. Compared with milk powder with higher lactose content, goat milk powder has natural A2 protein and smaller fat globule molecules. Goat milk is more nutritious, easier to digest and absorb, and less likely to cause lactose intolerance in pets. Therefore, PetNZC uses goat milk powder. Goat milk is the most natural animal milk for pets. We also added colostrum. Colostrum contains precious immunoglobulins and growth factors, which can effectively improve pets' immunity.
